A Centralized Mechanism to Make Predictions Based on Data From Multiple WSNs
In this work, we present a method that exploits a scenario with
inter-Wireless Sensor Networks (WSNs) information exchange by making
predictions and adapting the workload of a WSN according to their outcomes. We
show the feasibility of an approach that intelligently utilizes information
produced by other WSNs that may or not belong to the same administrative
domain. To illustrate how the predictions using data from external WSNs can be
utilized, a specific use-case is considered, where the operation of a WSN
measuring relative humidity is optimized using the data obtained from a WSN
measuring temperature. Based on a dedicated performance score, the simulation
results show that this new approach can find the optimal operating point
associated to the trade-off between energy consumption and quality of
measurements. Moreover, we outline the additional challenges that need to be
overcome, and draw conclusions to guide the future work in this field.Comment: 10 pages, simulation results and figures. Published i
A Pirâmide das RP: Os media sociais e o papel das Relações
This paper explores the relationship between social media as tools used by public relations
professionals and as part of the daily lives of organizations’ stakeholders, identifying
emergent practices in public relations and confronting new perspectives, both professional
and academic, on public relations functions and on its role within organizational
communication.
Departing from the agreement shared by academics and professionals on a profound shift in
public relations as a consequence of the increasingly widespread, intense and frequent use
of social media, this paper intends to clarify the nature and terms of that shift. Two
perspectives are confronted: one of them is focused on emergent professional practices and
regards social media as tools at the disposal of the PR professional; the other is broader in
scope and views social media as a contextual factor that influences both the stakeholders’
behavior patterns and PR practices, thus redefining the role of public relations within
organizational communication. The paper presents results from an exploratory study whose
goal was to identify a conceptual framework for understanding the impact of social media on
public relations.A relevant case study was identified, presenting the solution found by TAP, the Portuguese
airline company, to deal with communication crisis involving the social media and to
successfully manage social media use as a complementary communication channel. TAP’s
social media presence is managed through an articulation of public relations, marketing and
customer support where public relations assume a pivotal role. Drawing on this case study,
we propose the PR pyramid as a theoretical model that redefines the role of public relations
as the orchestrator of the consistent, coherent and integrated communication that is
demanded by the contemporary digital context
Space colonisation based procedural road generation
Dissertação de mestrado em Computer ScienceProcedural generation of content has been studied for quite some time and it is increasingly
relevant in scientific areas and in video-game and film industries. Procedural road layout
generation has been traditionally approached using L-Systems, with some works exploring
alternative avenues. Although originally conceived for biological systems modelling, the
adequacy of L-Systems as a base for road generation has been demonstrated in several
works.
In this context, this work presents an alternative approach for procedural road layout
generation that is also inspired by plant generation algorithms: space colonisation.
In particular, this work uses the concept of attraction points introduced in space colonisation
as its base to produce road layouts, both in urban and inter-city environments. As will
be shown, the usage of attraction points provides an intuitive way to parameterise a road
layout. The original Space Colonization Algorithm (SCA) generates a tree like structure,
but in this work, the extensions made aim to fully generate a inter-connected road network.
As most previous methods the method has two phases. A first phase generates what
is mostly a tree structure growing from user defined road segments. The second phase
performs the inter connectivity among the roads created in the first phase.
The original SCA parameters such as the killradius help to control the capillarity of the
road layout, the number of attraction points used by each segment will dictate its relevance
establishing a road hierarchy naturally dependent on the distribution of the attraction
points on the terrain. An angle control allows the creation of grid like or more organic
road layouts.
The distribution of the attraction points in the terrain can be conditioned by boundary
maps, containing parks, sea, rivers, and other forbidden areas. Population density maps can
be used to supply an explicit probabilistic distribution to the attraction points. Flow-fields
can be used to dictate the flow of the road layout. Elevation maps provide an additional
restriction regarding the steepness of the roads.
The tests were executed within a graphic toolbox developed simultaneously. The results
are exported to a geographical information file format, GeoJSON, and then maps are rendered
using a geospatial visualisation and processing framework called Mapnik.
For the most part, parameter settings were intuitively reflected on the road layout and
this method can be seen as a first step towards fully exploring the usage of attraction points
in the context of road layout.
A primeira
Coupled electromagnetic and thermal analysis of electric machines
Mestrado de dupla diplomação com a UTFPR - Universidade Tecnológica Federal do ParanáThe actual trend of the design process of electric machines is oriented to specific requirements of the application and is no longer based in a standard structure. From this point of view, the design procedure of electric machines became a multidisciplinary process, involving electromagnetic, thermal, and mechanical modelling in a highly iterative process between the different physics fields.
This dissertation deals with the design process of electric machines, proposing a coupling methodology for the electromagnetic and thermal models which are interrelated. The electromagnetic model establishes the main losses in electric machines: iron and resistive losses. These losses are, in turn, the main heat sources, responsible for heating and temperature distribution, i.e., the object of the thermal analysis, which affects recursively the losses, due to parameter’ dependency on temperature. Also, the machine temperature is crucial to maintain the lifetime of the machine. So, the coupled analysis is mandatory to achieve the nowadays requirements of higher energy efficiency and power density and cost reduction. Also, the coupled analysis enables optimization without the need to build several prototypes, making this process more time and cost-efficiency. Despite the temperature importance in electric machines, the thermal model was overlooked over the years. However, it has been receiving more attention in the past years.
In this work, the thermal modelling process is handled analytically and numerically through finite element analysis (FEA), which is also used to obtain the electromagnetic model. The modelling processes detailed during this work are applied into a case study of a single-phase transformer with the rated power of 1 kW. The numerical models were developed in the Ansys software suite, being the electromagnetic model developed in Ansys Maxwell while the thermal model has developed in Ansys Mechanical. At last, the coupling between the electromagnetic and thermal models was accomplished in Ansys Workbench.
The results obtained from the models are compared and validated with the experimental measurements of the losses and temperatures.
